Certified Medical Director Training for Medical Directors at New Jersey Long-term Care Facilities

 Whereas: On an average day, over 45,000 New Jerseyans—approximately 0.5% of the state population are residing in a nursing home, and

Whereas: Nursing home residents are among our most vulnerable community members. Many are over 85 years of age, and they may be disabled, medically frail or have mental impairments, and

Whereas: Nursing homes provide crucial medical, skilled nursing and rehabilitative care for both short stays (such as on a post-operative basis) and LTC. People receiving short term v. long-term care in nursing homes have very different needs, and

Whereas: Since the inception of the Certified Medical Director credential initiated in 1991, a study by Frederick Rowland et al. published in the July 2009 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association found that quality metrics are better in facilities that have a CMD for their medical director, and

Whereas: The only requirement CMS has for a nursing center’s medical director is to have an active medical license, and

Whereas: The Certified Medical Director (CMD) certification from ABPLM (American Board of Post-Acute and Long-term Medicine) involves physician candidates completing the Core Curriculum, which comprises 46 hours of content spanning 22 critical areas of long-term care management. RESOLVED: That the NJAFP promote improved support and clinical leadership of medical care by requiring New Jersey Nursing Home Medical Directors to be certified by the American Board of Post-Acute and Long-term Care Medicine, or an equivalent organization.

Residency Curriculum Guidelines for Integrative Medicine

Whereas: the use of integrative medicine has grown steadily over recent years, and

Whereas: family physicians have a responsibility to their patients to be able to engage in evidence-based discussions and evaluations of these practices, and

Whereas: Nursing homes provide crucial medical, skilled nursing and rehabilitative care for both short stays (such as on a post-operative basis) and LTC. People receiving short term v. long-term care in nursing homes have very different needs, and

Whereas: family medicine residency programs that have incorporated an integrative medicine curriculum have shown higher board passage rates, and

Whereas: the AAFP currently has an established policy supporting the pursuit of education related to integrative medicine, therefore be it

RESOLVED: that the NJAFP request that the AAFP develop family medicine residency curriculum guidelines for integrative medicine in alignment with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) educational competencies.
